Colorization Tips | Quick Tip #001

colorize |ˈkələˌrīz| add color to (a black-and-white photograph/movie) by means of computer technology.

Behind the scenes screenshot of a colorization project I've done a while back, it's a black and white portrait taken by the talented Diego Lema. Colorization is a bit tricky because you have to decide where to add color based on your imagination, however, for this image particularly, where the subject is a famous actor, I googled the actor's images and sampled his skin tone.

*Quick tip: don't mess too much with celebrity/public figures photos, everyone knows how they actually look like.

Colorization work is really fun and quick if you've already mastered the key tools; selection tools and color blending. It really trains your eyes on matching colors. In this photo, after colorizing it, I added a few adjustment layers and finally a neutral 50% grey layer for dodging and burning.

*Quick Tip: Try to add gaussian blurs on the masks for smoother transitions.
